I phoned Auburn Dental Magic this morning and spoke to the receptionist. I explained that a piece of my filling had come out and that I would like to have it replaced without a crown, if possible. The receptionist advised that they could most likely replace the filling, that the cost would be between $190 and $290, and that the dentist would examine the tooth first. A time was then scheduled for me to attend later that day. At the appointment, the dentist examined the tooth and took an X-ray, advising beforehand that the X-ray would cost $25, to which I agreed. After reviewing the X-ray, the dentist informed me that I would require a root canal before the tooth could be refilled and that the procedure would cost approximately $1,400. I was also advised that this could not be done that day, as I would need to be referred to the principal dentist, since she was only qualified to perform fillings. I objected to this recommendation, explaining that I was not experiencing any pain and had attended specifically to have a filling replaced. Despite this, the dentist maintained her position. I then stated that, as my time had been wasted, I would only be paying for the X-ray. During this conversation, the dentist made the comment, “Don’t worry, I am not trying to upsell you.” This is, in itself, a highly unusual and inappropriate statement to make to a customer and further contributed to my concern. Despite this comment, the overall experience felt like an attempt to upsell unnecessary treatment. At one point, the dentist was exceptionally rude, even referring to me as “mate” and speaking over me when I questioned her tone and the appropriateness of that language. When I raised this concern, her manner became hostile. At one stage, she told me to “just leave” and made an inappropriate hand gesture, as if shooing me away. I found her behavior unprofessional and lacking basic customer service. I would also like to note that, in my observation, the hygiene standards at the practice appeared poor. In the end, I informed her that I would be making a complaint about the experience. I then attended another dental practice later the same day, where a different dentist resolved the issue with my tooth without the need for a root canal. The service I received there was professional and excellent.
I would like to raise serious concerns regarding the practices at Auburn Dental Magic. It has been observed that dental assistants are performing procedures such as teeth cleaning, whitening, fillings, and other clinical treatments. These are procedures that should be carried out by a qualified and licensed dentist or appropriately registered oral health practitioner, not delegated to unqualified staff. Allowing non-licensed or inadequately trained personnel to perform such treatments raises significant concerns about patient safety, quality of care, and adherence to professional standards. Patients place their trust in dental providers to deliver care that meets legal and ethical requirements, and any deviation from this is deeply concerning. This practice appears inappropriate and may be in breach of healthcare regulations and professional guidelines. It is important that all clinical procedures are performed strictly within the scope of practice of registered professionals to ensure patient safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
